MEANING

The Lily of Florence, or Florentine Lily, is the artistic, stylized, and ideal representation of a blossoming “fior di Giaggiolo” (Iris flower). Full of vital energy, it is a symbol of purity, fertility and procreation, birth and rebirth.

Autentiqua’s pictorial interpretation of the city symbol stems from a highly emotional link with the local identity, and a sense of belonging to the city of Florence.

INSPIRATION

Autentiqua’s painted Lilies are the result of in-depth philological research. Each piece is handcrafted with the utmost attention to detail, resulting in a unique and original work.

Originally, the Florentine lily was white on a red field. But in the 13th century, the Guelph party decided to reverse the colors, to distinguish themselves from the Ghibellines. As a result, the present coat of arms of the city of Florence has been in use since 1251, and features a red lily on white background.

PROCESS

The symmetrical shape of the painted Lily is precise and rigorous, yet light and dreamy at the same time. It is made with touches of gestural brush strokes, with light and shadows that enhance its contours and symbolic value. The overall result is a harmony of multiple balances.

Each piece is hand-made with ancient traditional lean tempera techniques, with plaster, earth, pigments, and vegetable glues on natural canvas. The final steps of aging and patina enrich the painting with the charm and mystery of a precious, timeless work.

The textured finish of the surface is made up of cracks, fraying, chippings, patinas, and layering that remind us of the ancient frescoed walls.
