The Florentine lily is the stylized representation of an Iris in full bloom. Full of vital energy, it is a symbol of purity, fertility and procreation, birth and rebirth.

In particular, the Ghibelline version of the Lily of Florence has significant historical connotations of secularism, and for this reason it is suitable as a strongly symbolic wall decor in law firms and notaries’ offices.

The Lilies painted by Autentiqua are the result of in-depth philological research, and each piece is carried out with the utmost attention to detail in order to create a truly unique and original artwork.

The “Ghibelline” lily – white on a red field – is the original city symbol of Florence. It wasn’t until the 13th century, after the battle of Montaperti, that members of the Guelph party decided to reverse the colors, in order to distinguish themselves from the enemy faction. Therefore, the current coat of arms of the city of Florence – with the red lily on a white field – has been in use since 1251.

The shape of the Lily – precise and rigorous, yet airy and dreamy at the same time – is made up of gestural brushstrokes, with highlights and shadows which enhance its symmetrical contours and symbolic value. The resulting effect is a complex harmony of balances.

Each piece is hand-made with ancient traditional lean tempera techniques, with plaster, clay, pigments, and vegetable glues on natural canvas. The final steps of aging and distressing enrich the painting with the charm and mystery of a precious, timeless work.

The textured finish of the surface is made up of cracks, frayings, chippings, patinas, and layerings that remind us of ancient frescoed walls.
